What are task dependencies?
If you’ve ever worked on a project – and we’re pretty sure that you have – you’ll know that a project is never really made of one or two single tasks. Instead, there are often multiple smaller tasks leading to the completion of bigger tasks.
And the truth is, every little task adds up and takes time. Suddenly, instead of just two main tasks to complete, you’ve got a whole list. So how do you even begin to make your way through it all? It can be quite stressful, but we’re going to help keep things simple.
To start with, these smaller tasks are often referred to as task dependencies. This means that a task is dependent on the completion of a smaller task to make it to the next level.
The four types of task dependencies
To make it easier to prioritise your tasks, categorising them will help you get started. Four main types exist:
- Mandatory: These tasks are required by contract or by law and need to be completed.
- Discretionary: These tasks are not always necessary, but may be required to facilitate the project, like organising transport.
- External: This is something that will need to be outsourced or completed by a third party before a task can be completed. This could be something like client approval.
- Internal: These are the tasks that are run by your team and you have full control over, like building and testing a system.
Why you need to identify task dependencies
Knowing what will influence your project will assist you in planning accordingly to ensure that deadlines are met. It will also assist in resource allocation to ensure task completion as well as provide insight into potential risks that may arise.
