Working through lunch, is it a good idea?
We live in a world where lunch breaks are a luxury afforded to few. Many of us are guilty of spending the hour at our desks, sneaking in a sandwich in between in all. Sure, it seems logical and productive. But is it really the best idea?
The truth is, despite the good intention, it’s probably not the best way to spend your time. A lunch break is supposed to give you the chance to recharge and refresh in the middle of your crazy day. By not taking the time to do so, you may feel more run down, less productive and generally just tired.
Let’s get real about the elusive lunch break
Work is demanding, especially in modern times. This is forcing many employees to try to get as much done as possible – and using their lunch break to do so. As a result, other employees begin to think that if they don’t work through their lunch breaks like their coworkers that it’ll be seen as loafing
So, between the pressing workload and peer pressure, we’ve suddenly got a workforce that is chained to their desks.
Your lunch break is not a waste of time
Taking a break is encouraged for so many reasons. It’s a chance to step away and regroup. You can go for a walk and stretch your legs and refuel for the remainder of the day. It is also an opportunity to touch base with your team on a personal level and become part of a bigger family. A quick mental break is also good for your productivity and concentration and will help improve your performance.
Avoiding the urge to power through
If you have too much work to do in a day, rather look at prioritizing it according to the urgency and deadlines. Focus on what you can get done instead of fixating on all the other tasks that are not as important just yet.
If that doesn’t work, ask yourself what you will be gaining by working through your break? Unless it really is going to make a huge difference, you’re probably better off taking the time to refocus and reenergize.
